Understanding the Marine Life of the Emerald Coast!
Purple Flag Warning
When you spot the purple flag, there might be jellyfish and stingrays around, but don’t worry—you can still enjoy the shallow waters safely!
In case of a sting:
- Call 911 immediately if there are signs of an allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing.
- For most cases, rinse the affected area with saltwater (avoid touching with bare hands), then use hot water or take a hot shower.
- Follow up with distilled vinegar and hydrocortisone for further care.
Sea Turtle Nesting Season
From March to October, sea turtles nest during the night. Help protect these magnificent creatures:
- Use turtle-safe lighting near the water (many beachfront properties in Destin, Miramar Beach, and Santa Rosa Beach already do).
- Keep the beach clean; remember to remove chairs and trash daily.
Fun Fact: Did you know? The temperature of the sand determines the sex of turtle hatchlings: cooler sands mean males, while warmer sands mean females.
Dolphin Watching on the Emerald Coast
