Welcome to Marine Life 101 on the beautiful Emerald Coast!
Purple Flag Up: When you spot the purple flag, there might be jellyfish and stingrays around, but don’t worry—you can still enjoy the shallow waters safely!
In case of a sting:
- Call 911 immediately if there are signs of an allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing.
- For most cases, rinse the affected area with saltwater (avoid touching with bare hands), then use hot water or take a hot shower.
- Follow up with distilled vinegar and hydrocortisone for further care.
Sea Turtle Nesting Season: From March to October, sea turtles nest during the night. Help protect these magnificent creatures:
- Use turtle-safe lighting near the water (many beachfront properties in Destin, Miramar Beach, and Santa Rosa Beach already do).
- Keep the beach clean; remember to remove chairs and trash daily.
Fun Fact: Did you know? The temperature of the sand determines the sex of turtle hatchlings: cooler sands mean males, while warmer sands mean females.
Dolphin Watching: For the best chance to spot dolphins, head out early in the morning and catch the sunrise!
Family-Friendly Activities: If you’re with kids and/or prefer to sleep in, visit the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park on Okaloosa Island for an entertaining dolphin show.
For a unique experience, check out Gator Beach at Fudpucker’s Beachside Bar and Grill to see alligators. Admission is free for a view; online tickets offer a more in-depth adventure.
Local marine life: Don’t miss out on catching or enjoying popular fish like grouper, amberjack, red snapper as well as shellfish such as snow crab, and shrimp. Consider booking a fishing charter for an unforgettable experience!
Beachside Discoveries: Ever wondered about those small gray creatures on the shoreline? They’re sand crabs, constantly swimming, burrowing, and chasing waves.
Keep an eye out for tiny, multi-colored shells on the beach—they are likely live bean clams!
Whether sitting in the sand or snorkeling in the ocean, you’re DESTINed for a sighting!
Explore the wonders of the Emerald Coast’s marine life while enjoying your stay in a beachfront vacation rental, beachfront house for rent, or beachfront condo in Destin, Miramar Beach, or Santa Rosa Beach, Florida.
