While you’re sitting on your balcony at one of our Solely Beachfront properties and you see one of those fishing boats roll by, do you ever wonder what they are catching?

Right now in spring, they are catching Cobia (KOH-bee-uh). This Torpedo-shaped fish has a broad, flat head, is color is dark brown, and often features a dark lateral stripe from eye to tail. Juveniles have distinct horizontal black-and-white stripes. 🦓 These fish are highly prized and fast growing.  They can live 12-15 years and grow to be over 6ft and 100 pounds.  They can be found worldwide in tropical and subtropical coastal waters.  This warm water swimmer is known for it’s firm, white, buttery meat.

If you are looking to try this seasonal treat, there are many restaurants in Destin and surrounding area that have daily catch on their menus.  Such as, Surf Hut Destin, Stinky’s Fish Camp, Cafe Thirty A, The Edge Seafood Restaurant & Sky Bar, Dewey Destin’s Seafood Restaurant, Fish on Seafood House, The Crab Trap, Harbor Docks.

Let’s take it a step further and you can charter a fishing boat and go catch your own, Cobia.

After a day of fishing the charter crew will do the really hard part, they will clean all of it for you to take home.  If you don’t know how to cook it…  There are a few restaurants at Harbor Walk that will cook and serve you your fresh catch.  Like Harbor Docks, Brotula’s Seafood House & Steamer, Boathouse Oyster Bar, Harry T’s Lighthouse, and Dewey Destin’s Harborside.

Whether you want to catch it your self or just watch from the balcony.  It’s all waiting for you on the NW Gulf Coast of Florida this Spring.  We can’t wait to see you.
